HBCUs VERSUS THE STATE OF MARYLAND CONTINUE FIGHT FOR EDUCATIONAL EQUALITY
WASHINGTON, D.C. - JUNE 7, 2017 - This morning on News One Now, host and managing editor Roland Martin interviewed Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law about a lawsuit between a group of alumni representing the state of Maryland's four historically black colleges and universities and the state of Maryland. The alumni - who hail from Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Morgan State University, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore - claim that the state underfunded their schools and allowed other state schools to duplicate their programs. The suit was originally filed in 2006, and closing arguments are now being heard. The legal team for the alumni is recommending that about 100 programs be transferred to or started at HBCUs, including the transfer of a homeland security program to Coppin State University from Towson University, where it is currently in place.
